In an historic move, the Nuchatlaht First Nation has filed an Aboriginal-title claim in British Columbia.
The claim calls for the federal and provincial governments to recognize aboriginal title to the Nuchatlaht’s land on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It also calls for a stop to logging in the area by Western Forest Products.
The claim is the first since the precedent-setting 2014 Tsilhqot’in decision, in which the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favour for the first time to a First Nation’s title to a specific tract of land.
